NOUMENON

23.02.2022
Szimpla Mini, Budapest

What do we expect from a work of art? This, of course, depends a lot on our general attitude, temperament, and mood. Sometimes we want to be upset, we want to be shocked, we would most likely to see some destruction. But honestly; can such an expectation be met? For example, can an artist be dadaist enough for his work to appeal to an audience even „more dada” than it? No. Only unsuspecting audiences can be outraged. The greed of an audience that wants to be offended cannot be satisfied. Going beyond all this, let’s move on to the traditional expectations placed on art.

The connoisseurs of the first line, the pharaohs and caesars, princes, and bourgeois, expected the work to be at least beautiful, but it was even better if it was stunning. But this direction went bankrupt. The need for beauty was embraced by the masses, alienated from the privileged, as were so many others from their prerogatives. The “beauty” slowly wore off the canvas, even the cigarette boxes, and moved into artificial nail shops, knife grinders, and tattoo parlors. So much beauty is enough for the people, the beauty is scattered like an aerosol.

Still, some kind of transcendent demand remained in us. For the enjoyment of art in many of us and for creation in some of us. What, on the one hand, can still attract the attention of art lovers in our overflowing, post-beauty, phenomenal world? On the other hand, what else can creators try to introduce us to? Maybe the infinity in itself, which is stunning in itself - and therefore perhaps beautiful - can be displayed in any medium.

And just as Leonardo da Vinci says beauty lies not in mass but in proportion, so Benoit Mandelbort says infinity lies in complexity, not quantity. That is, both beauty and complexity (mystery) are mysteries beyond the phenomenon. Because what does the paint tube hide? It is no secret, it is written on it. Phenomenon. Compound of the four elements. But what about Bátor Tóth's paintings? On these canvases it is as if the energy that propelled the primitive phenomenon into yoke and produced the new quality appeared. Noumenon. The complexity, a slice of the infinite, which as such is beautiful at the same time.
